Welcome to Economics! Economics just may be the most practical and relevant course you’ll ever take. Economics is about the things we want, the things we need, which, more often than not, are the same things that other people want and need. Economics offers a way to understand who gets what, when, how, and why. Economics can help you better understand the times in which we live and better prepare for the future.
This course will provide you with an understanding of the way in which society organizes its limited resources to satisfy unlimited wants. You will be introduced to the major characteristics of the mixed market economic system in the U.S. and how basic economic questions are answered. We will cover the role economics plays in the life of every individual, and how economics can improve the quality of your decision-making process.
The course will explore the fundamental concepts of free enterprise, supply and demand, business cycles, fiscal and monetary policy, economic development, international trade and personal finance. We will explore economic models from a microeconomic and macroeconomic perspective. Microeconomics analyzes the how and why consumers and producers interact in specific markets. Macroeconomics focuses on the national level, examining the performance of the economy through such variables as the level and rate of growth, inflation and deflation, unemployment, imports and exports, and the role of the government in driving or hindering economic growth.
A central feature of the class will be the practical application of economic theory and models to real world situations. To that end, we will use “problem based learning” and a modified “case method” approaches in class. In addition, a significant portion of the course will incorporate current events, taking advantage of present economic trends and developments to test the validity of established theories and see their relevance and application to the world.
Finally, the course will provide an overview of personal finance, reviewing important principles and strategies with an emphasis on helping you make informed choices about your personal finance. You will also be creating a Financial Portfolio as your final project, something you will be able to use as a guide as you enter the world of personal finance and investing.
